Tracing back John Brearley’s tree gave me the possible surnames of Piper and Brearly. I’ve found no marriage of a Brearley or a Piper to a Featherstone. Maybe she married someone else before marrying a Featherstone

Then I got this email:

From: Robert Dix
Sent: 05 April 2011 23:27
To: Paul Featherstone
Subject: Eliza Ann Massey

Dear Paul,
As you know, our possible point of contact has been my relative John Robert Brearley apparently with a married sister Eliza Ann Featherstone and her son Lionel as recorded in the 1891 Census. They are shown living at 72 Pimlico Road in Belgravia where he is a grocers manager. The 1911 Census for this property indicates a shop with three rooms over including a kitchen.
I am confident this John Brearley is my relative since his details are a close match but doubted that he and Eliza Ann were blood relatives. I have recently made contact with Eliza’s grandson, Tony Harris, and he has confirmed that they were not related.
The basic details that I have recently established are as follows –
During the 1881 Census Eliza Ann Massey from Rotherhithe was a servant to E Henry Harris – an analyst and assayer at 81 Queens Square Bloomsbury. RG11/337/22/pp39&40.
In 1883 they were married in Southwark under the assumed name of Featherstone, but the subsequent census returns record them at separate addresses with Eleazer using his correct surname and shown as single.
Lionel was born in 1888 with his baptism record indicating the family home at 72 Pimlico Road.
Eleazer Henry Harris was the only son of Aaron Harris and Sarah Barnett of Bishopsgate. Eleazer lost his father in 1869 and essentially became the head of the family. He had four sisters who did not marry. Eliza Ann’s parents were Joseph Massey and Charlotte Stratton.
The probate information for Eliza Ann Featherstone is cross-referenced with the name Harris, which enabled me to make the connection with Eleazer Harris.
It’s clear that Eliza Ann is not the daughter of John Pimlott Brearley – my great-grandfather – and his second ‘wife’ Mary Ann Piper as shown on your tree and, it would appear, not a Featherstone.
Regards,
Robert Dix

1891 census RG12/73/7/121
72 Pimlico Road, St George’s Hanover Square, London
John Brearley head S 24 grocer’s Manager Kent, Tunbridge Wells
Eliza Featherstone sister M 28 Surrey, Rotherhithe
Lionel A Featherstone nephew 3 Surrey, Bermondsey

1901 census RG13/553/10
4 Wildfell Terrace, Lewisham, London
Eliza A Featherstone wife M 42 London, Rotherhithe
Lionel A Featherstone son 13 London, Bermondsey

1911 census RG14/2782 RG14PN2782 RG78PN95 RD29 SD3 ED33 SN29
4 Wildfell Terrace, Catford, London SE
husband away from home
Eliza Ann Featherstone wife married 27 years (1 child born alive, 1 still living 52 Rotherhithe Kent
Lionel Anthony Featherstone son S 23 investigator and translator (patent specifications and the like) Sub District St James St Olave Southwark in the County of Surrey

1911 census form states filled in by Lionel Anthony Featherstone on behalf of Edward Henry Featherstone (head)

More About ELIZA ANN MASSEY:
Occupation: 1881, domestic servant8
Residence: 1891, 72 Pimlico Road, Belgravia, Middlesex9

Marriage Notes for ELEAZER HARRIS and ELIZA MASSEY:
marriage registration index Dec 1883 St Olave SRY 1d 569
Edward Henry Featherstone and Eliza Ann Massey

Child of ELEAZER HARRIS and ELIZA MASSEY is:
i.
